Neuro = your brain and nervous system
Linguistic = how language is constructed
Programming = building strategies to produce desired behaviour, or remove unwanted behaviour/habits
NLP = the study of how Mind creates reality through language and behavior.
NLP is a powerful collection of language-based tools and techniques that can be applied in sports, business, therapy, teaching, or anywhere people are interested in learning and change and maximising their performance.
Basically NLP is useful to anyone who wants to:
- understand how they create their thoughts, feelings and behaviour
- find a way to change the way they are currently experiencing life.
NLP and HNLP can help you change…
- depression and anxiety into increased ability to handle life with grace
- phobias into a mere memory
- learning difficulties into proud results
- fear of public speaking into excitement to share what you know
- stress into peace or power. Or a powerful peace…
What do you want to change?
… and how do you want to be different?
“Textimonial” – after telephone coaching session with a mountain bike racer:
Thanks buddy …
Race went much better than i expected … definitely stronger position mentally thanks very very much to you!!
How? – not why?
A powerful aspect of NLP is that it concentrates on the HOW you do what you do. Knowing WHY you do what you do is sometimes a useful insight, but the key to changing your behaviour is in the HOW you do it.
When Willpower is not enough
Most of us have had the experience of simply trying harder to get over a hurdle. Perhaps you have been telling yourself off for not giving up smoking, or for being scared to get back on the horse that you fell off.
If you have tried a few times to change your behaviour, and its just getting harder to motivate yourself to try again, it might help to become aware of the automatic patterns that you keep doing that are getting in the way. Have you ever heard someone say, “well, part of me wants to change “x”, but another part doesnt want to change…”?
If you are trying to change habits, you may be running into a couple of obstacles. Sometimes a new skill, or way of thinking or planning needs to be learnt. For instance people with weight issues tend to think quite differently about what and when they eat – so its handy to know how the experts think differently from you. Sometimes a person knows what they want, but its like a part of them is more committed to keeping things just-the-way-they-are-thank-you-very-much! – that calls for something called a Parts Integration, usually quick, fun and revealing, that aims to leave you very much aligned, instead of double-minded, on your goal.
Phobias are different in that the person is trying to learn, but their automatic response, usually fear, is so intense that their brains are literally in fight or flight, so they aint gonna learn nothin at that point.
Most approaches to phobias involve giving out tiny doses of the problem so you can get over them. In my experience its usually much faster to do the NLP fast phobia release process, which literally gives people the new perspective they have been lacking, that diffuses the issue very efficiently.
A session of NLP
NLP is a tool used by the practitioner in a conversation that aims to help you change your patterns of thinking and behaviour. Expect:
- Respect for and intense curiosity about the subtleties of how you process information
- questions that give you a chance to change your relationship to your issue, or maybe even literally blow your mind
- personal insight and understanding
- the odd bit of confusion as you realise you cant do the problem like you used to
HNLP is Humanistic Neuro Linguistic PsychologyTM, a development of “regular” NLP created by John Overdurf and Julie Silverthorn. They used the term “humanistic” to emphasise their emphasis on respect for the client -the personal touch-, and their down-to-earth practical approach to helping their clients.
One of the basic premises from which they work is that everyone and everything is interconnected. They are not alone; quantum physics and all major spiritual systems support this. But theory doesn’t always translate into our actual experience.
Humanistic Neuro-Linguistic Psychology creatively integrates quantum physics, modern neuro science, hypnosis, accelerated learning, spirituality, and common sense.
The Presuppositions of HNLP
Presuppositions are a like beliefs – ways of looking at things to help get insight, or generate some new ideas.
How would your issue change if you Considered, Fully, All the implications you hadn’t yet thought of in realation to the following…?
- No matter what you think you are, you are always more than that.
We have all the resources we need.
- Reality is a construction.
You get what you focus on.
- Reality and meaning are created through relationships.
Things exist by virtue of their mutually consistent relationships.
- Living is learning. We can’t not learn. All behavior is motivated by a positive, self-adaptive intention.
- Perception is learned.Memory is an active, synthetic process.
- Everything and everyone is interconnected.
The material universe is a dynamic web of interrelated events.
None of the properties of the web are fundamental.
They all follow from properties of the other parts and the overall consistency of their interrelations determines the structure of the entire web. At the quantum level we are one, there are no local causes. No matter what you think you are, you are always and in all ways more than that………..
